This book has been very popular with the kids at the library. During our recent Book Fair a sequel was featured so I decided that I better sneak a copy of this out of the library and read it for myself.
The big doberman on the cover is a tab bit misleading. This book is not really about a dog, but rather a group of kids led by Griffin "the man with a plan" fighting the injustice heaped on them by adults.
It is not so much an "us vs. them" mentality as much as it is an adventure trying to correct a specific injustice. Griffin had been cheated by an unscrupulous man named S. Wendell (which morphs into "Swindle".
Teamwork, putting differences aside, celebrating specific and varied talents of individuals and justice are all themes.
This would be a good read aloud especially with 4th or 5th graders.
