I bought this latest book by Haruki Murakami in Hong Kong last month. I expected a lot from him since he is so popular, and I read about his excellent reviews.

Let's just say you should not expect too much. I dont like his first novel Norwegian Wood. Don't ask me why, I just don't like it as much as I like Banana Yoshimoto's.

But this book changes my mind. It's a short story compilation and from the first intro Haruki-san wrote in the first pages, I sort of understand how he works. We are rather alike in writing, we concentrate on either short stories or novels, and only switch when we are done.

From his 25 stories in this book, I find a few I dont like. They are strange and I find myself enjoying the plot until the ending ruins it all and leaves things hanging.

My favorites are Shinagawa Monkey and Birthday Girl. A few others I like but get mixed up by the title. :) Enjoyable read, a pack of horror stories, adventures, love stories, loneliness, packed up into one thick pa...more
