I thought this was a wonderful coming of age story. Evelyn, the 11 year old at the beginning of the story, lives with her mom on the "wrong side of the tracks". She has no father and her grandfather has not forgiven her mother for this "mistake". The story continues on through her life to the age of 18, dealing with all the ups and downs she must endure. It is a harsh reminder that school age children have some mighty high hurdles to overcome: lack of resources, bullies, the popular crowd, little encouragement etc. I thought the best part of the story was that she started out as a one dimensional thinker on issues of science, religion etc., but then expanded her thinking and pondered over what was true and what wasn't. Much like the rest of us.
