** spoiler alert ** This book had great potential, but I think it lost its focus a bit. Karina is a Haitian teenager who is living in America with her mother, siblings, and abusive step-father, called "the Daddy." They live constantly under the threat of getting the "beat up" of their lives from the Daddy, who explodes at the least provocation. Karina is also struggling to find a friend and come to terms with her sexuality. There's a lot going on in this one, and I think it would have been better if the focus was less diluted. Still, it was a nailbiter from the first page, when Karina reveals that she has killed someone.
