This is a book I first read when I was 16, and almost ten years later it's still just as brilliant as it ever was. These clever, dark, twisted reworkings of fairy tales have so many layers they can be enjoyed over and over again and reveal something new each time, but the real joy is Carter's use of language. A masterclass in breathtakingly well-written short stories.
