um.. it's a nice little book about the power of literature. "poignant" comes to mind, but my initial reaction, upon finishing the book, was disappointment.. maybe all the booker prize hype gave me irrational expectations? i let it marinate for a day or two and i can honestly say i'm haunted by it, and want to re-read it. I didn't love it, but I can't quite seem to let it go either.
A good 2/3s of the way in, the book struck me as simplistic, but lovely. Then, with no warning, unspeakable violence happens.. described in the same simply, loving language, which made that plot twist all the more appalling to me. Resolution to the underlying conflict quickly follows-- the speed of which bothered me almost as much as the blip of action. I quite liked the Dickens denouement though. The only thorn, for me, was the sudden shock and resolution of the conflict. The underlying plot - the magic of story-telling- was beautiful.
I now have to re-read Great Ex, so I can re-read t
