One of those books that is extremely well written, but that I didn't like. What a miserable person Olive is. I'm glad I don't know her. Characters in this novel, which is more a collection of stories or vignettes, are beautifully drawn, even the sour Olive. And the individual stories contained so much humanity, though perhaps more death and tragedy than I might wish to read, but, as I said, the writing was a pleasure.

Bark's Book Nonsense Sour characters really put me off. I meet enough of them in real life and can't tolerate them for long in a book I'm reading for pleasure.

bookczuk There are many delightful characters in the stories, but Olive pummels her way into them all.

Barbara You expressed my sentiments exactly.
