some of the passages on the yearning for the ideal woman are exquisite, and i think this would make a beautiful film, especially if it fleshed out the eroticism, and the characters of signorina and frau reisner. nevertheless the writing style made me roll my eyes more than once so i'm sticking to 3 stars. pleasurable but a tad over the top. maybe i would have found it less so if the narrator identified as olivia at 16 rather than in her twenties.
