If this book had ended any other way I would have given it 2 stars.

"How can so much be riding on the ending?" You may ask. Simply this:

Without the ending Hemingway chose this book would read like a Nicholas Spark's novel. And I don't know about you, but I would like nothing more than to burn all of Spark's novel in one big "stop writing!" pile.

Like all of Hemingway's work, it has complicated love affairs and a feeling of hopelessness that, yes, can get a little old, but also makes it a page turner.

If you find yourself sitting there, weighing whether or not to quit, I suggest to keep on trucking. Like I said, without the ending this book would have been close to crap, but with the ending it's almost a work of art.
