Read in December, 2009

This is really two books in one: one novel about a murder in Sweden and another novel about the situation in tumultous and violent South Africa just before the end of apartheid. Both novels are skillfully integrated into each other's stories. The result is a really great, popular novel.

The novelist really gets inside the heads of violent extremists and shows how planned violence can send tentacles into the most innocent of countries. He also illustrates how strong political motivations can harness the violence of a society's psychopaths and killers to do irreparable harm to anyone who gets in their way through death, injury or psychological trauma that involuntarily destroys a life.

I highly recommend this book.
