While I realize that this is a beginning reader, which is necessarily written in a simplified style, nevertheless I found it written in uninteresting prose. The story is about a young girl who helps her village of St. Michaels in Maryland when the British are ready to invade and attack during the War of 1812. It's based on a true event, though Caroline and her family are fictional. I was particularly bothered throughout the entire book by the depiction of Caroline with short-cropped hair like a boy and never wearing a bonnet. Her shoes were depicted as what look like pumps or slippers instead of the boots she would have worn. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think this was historically accurate. Altogether a disappointing read.
