This was an easy, quick read that I could not put down. The story revolved around the Shaw family and their struggling to deal with the loss of the father/husband through death and the oldest daughter/sister through running away. Maura, the mother, relocates the family to cope with the grief and start her new teaching career. The book shows the struggles of each family member as they try to move forward with their life while constantly searching for what they have lost. The book does illustrate several sister relationships - Maura with her estranged sister Katharine, Beck with her run away sister Carrie and Pell with her sister Lucy (new friends of Beck). It also touches on the relationship of long dead Mary and her sister Beatrice.
