Within the first turns of the page, you realize that this book is going to demand your full attention. And that's good, because Ntozake Shange's poetry and Rod Brown's paintings are utterly, brilliantly fantastic. Very rarely can you find a children's book that deals with such horrible events in history in such a beautiful, yet straightforward, manner.
