Violent, tragic, funny, with tons of sex and drugs - is this a country western song, or a great historical novel? 'Tis the latter, and one of the best I have read. It's long but reads briskly. The characters are well-wrought and the plot easy to follow. It's a battle royale between the forces of Christianity and Islam, and it's not crystal clear which are the good guys and which are the bad guys. What we do know is that our hero, the gallant Captain Mattias Tannhauser, will stop at nothing to save the honor of a lady - or at least make a few bucks in the process. Ah, but I've given away too much already. Anyone looking for a good novel, look no further. As of this writing it is still in hardcover, but since this is supposed to be the first book of a trilogy, I expect it would be in paperback soon, maybe by the spring.
