This book is fun. Yes, just plain, good old-fashioned fun. It's a vampire book that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet interjects enough humanity to make you feel for the characters.
Jody wakes up in the Bay Area under a dumpster with her hand burned to a crisp. She's bright enough to figure out something is going on and she needs to figure out what, and fast. She has a good idea and realizes she needs help. She comes across the overnight stock crew at the Safeway and its new night supervisor/aspiring writer/newcomer to town C Thomas Flood.
Tommy and Jody make a great couple for the new millenium. They're mismatched, unsure, fallible yet learning to truly love and become who they are as people, even though one is now an immortal child of the night. They'll take you on a journey of the absurd, but also bring moments of poignant observation. It's simply a wonderful yarn that can be enjoyed by most anyone.
