Dazzling inventions, air pirates, evil bad guys, underground vaults, goggles, daring rescues, gold, Blight gas, a one-armed bartender, a princess, zombies. Oh, what fun!
The setting was vividly described and rich in details. The main characters were well developed and fascinating. Briar Wilkes, widow of Leviticus Blue, eccentric inventor, searches for her teenage son, Zeke, in a walled-off section of Seattle, where a dangerous yellow gas shrouds the city, forcing the remaining inhabitants to live underground. Lots of action, suspense, and vibrant, quirky characters helped move the story along at a brisk pace.
I thoroughly enjoyed the twists, surprises, and very satisfying ending of this riveting adventure story.

This just came in for me at the library - I don't even remember requesting it! But I remember putting it on my TBR, so I guess I'll be reading it soon. :)

really cool review, nancy. (smiles) ive been wanting to try a steampunk novel. im really into steampunk musick, and i am a sucker for air pirates, goggles (grins) i wanted to find one that was character driven. so this looks really good-im going to get it now!

im having trouble defining steampunk musick. so i found this, and i think its a pretty good description by joshua pfeifer of vernian process. (at tor.com)“theres no defining element to steampunk music....music created by steampunk fans, or music that steampunk fans find invokes the atmosphere they expect from a steampunk setting or aesthetic”
to me, its the feeling, a romantic and fun feeling of an imaginary past of steam-powered airships, of corsets and frock coats and top hat wearing victorians mingling with pirates, a fantasy space that really draws me in.
