This book took my breath away with the amazing deliberateness of the writing. Wharton's prose is exquisite; it is so clear that she chose each word with care and made certain to convey the exact meaning intended. It is like poetry in its efficiency. What a joy, after reading so much junk, to experience something so sharp, intelligent, complex, crystalline.
