The City of Ember (The First Book Of Ember) by Jeanne Duprau
Solid contribution to the rapidly growing youth fantasy genre. It's missing that extra something to put it in the same league as classics like "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and "A Wrinkle in Time", but it does have an interesting premise/theme and a well-paced story.
