Tye's review
I had never contemplated reading this novel until now, but I love the film adaptation. If you're curious, Robert Altman cast Elliot Gould as a bit of a (non-Bogart) hapless and self-deprecating Philip Marlowe. Also, Altman chose to set the story in early 1970s Los Angeles. Although it's not the strictest adaptation of the novel, it's a really good film.
