It is hard to find suitable words to describe this masterpiece. Hardy's greatest talent is using the written word to paint incredible pictures in the mind that remain with one long after finishing the story. I found myself identifying and sympathizing with the characters. I found the protagonist realistic, believable and pathetic at first. By the end, life has tempered the once selfish, impulsive man, and transformed him into a hero. I found the ending thorouhly satisfying. I will have to reread this book and devote some time for a more focused study of it.
