Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
Probably about 200 pages too long -- I think he could've split the novel into two or maybe even three books -- but the scenes of street life in Bombay are extraordinarily vivid (as is the passage set in the Arthur Road prison) and very well done. One of the books I find myself coming back to, just to re-read chapters I liked.
