** spoiler alert ** This DK book falls under the category of Sci/Fi, Thriller, as does a good percentage of his novels. The book starts off with just a normal working stiff who works as a beat cop to support his family. Him and his partner report to the scene of a vandalism and after some dialogue and some backstory the policemen meet up with a gunman who just happens to show up at the gas station at the same time.
Violence ensues and to make a long story short the partner is killed and the main character is severely injured, bad guy dead.
Now switch to a different character, an old man who lives by himself on a ranch in Montana, somewhat of a codger, but still lovable. He has survived his wife and only son in life and is a loner.Finds himself in the middle of some really weird events, and in the middle of docomenting them, he has a severe heart attack and dies, but not before he leaves a journal of what has happened and he hides in the freezer for the heir of his estate to find. Low and behold he is the father of the main character Jack's parter. With no other surviving family he leaves the ranch to, you guessed it Jack, his wife and their lovable son.
The family inherits the house at a crucial part in their lives and decide to drop everything and move to Montana. The wife,Heather notices that something is amiss right off the bat, but doesn't say anything to Jack, not wanting to ruin their fresh new life in Montana she doesn't say anything to Jack until it is too late and their son may be in trouble.
Don't worry the dog shows up right around page 180 or so, and what a good little furface he is. The hero in this book is who you would least expect and I was again blown away at DK's skill as a writer. Good book, but the last 5 pages are very predictable. Thank you for reading my review and happy reading
