Jax has really managed to grow up and become responsible in this book. With her team she sets out to broker an alliance with the "Bugs". With Vel at her side she manages to do justice to their culture as she navigates her new diplomatic role.

I really like how Jax and Vel's relationship has changed to one where they are each other's closets friends even thought they are so different from the way they thing to even the species they are. They seem to constantly surprise each other with the acceptance they find. I do have to chuck at Vel's bounty hunter bag, it seems like he carries everything a person could ever want or need in it.

Jax also finds herself walking a fine line with March. To save everyone last time he had to become a killer without a conscience. He can't seem to find his way back to his own humanity even though he remembers what he was like before, making him dangerous to everyone around him.

The political intrigue with the Bugs was fascinating. Their whole way of life so different, even down to how they decorate and furnish with live plants.

In the end Jax finds herself in a situation where it is hard to depend on those around her and even her best efforts can't stop what is coming.
