The Golden Compass was a very good book. It was thoughtful, with a brave and interesting heroine and well developed characters. It was not the sort of story where you automatically hate the antagonist and adore the protagonist, but the sort of story where each character, be he or she protagonist or antagonist, is realistic enough to have more than one side to their character. Once you get to know the antagonist it is easy to understand where they are coming from, making them all the more interesting. The protagonist also has more than one side. Being the protagonist, the reader is usually compelled to sympathize with her more instead of the antagonist, but the protagonist has a darker side as well. The Golden Compass is an extremely good, well written book.
