This is completely different from The Poisonwood Bible, which I appreciate. It makes me happy when authors can do different things. I did not sob and wail for 20 minutes over this book like I did with Poisonwood, but the last couple of chapters were definitely a bit heart-wrenching.
The writing style here reminded me a little of John Steinbeck, in that it is clear, rough-and-tumble language. I couldn't put this down, and read it while I should have been packing my room up to move home for the summer. Totally worth it. :)
