recommended for: fans of southern writers looking for new material
5 stars for good storytelling. as i find myself writing more fiction, what i'm really looking for in a novel is simply good storytelling. tartt knows how to spin a tale elegantly without hype or overt cleverness, which so much contemporary literary fiction falls prey to these days.
the little friend reads like a very traditional novel & tartt's voice is very much in the lineage of the southern writers. with its two adolescent characters trying to solve a mystery in a small mississippi town, there is an awful lot of to kill a mockingbird in this work, without borrowing directly from harper lee's classic tale.
the character of harriet is really well-done & she's very likable & wise beyond her years. there's no doubt there is a lot of the author herself in this character (she knows her too well).
this is a meaty novel with a lot of meandering detail to get lost away in & in many respects, i think i actually enjoyed it more than the secret history. somehow, i feel ...more
