The End (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 13) by Lemony Snicket
A pretty disappointing final chapter. I'm all for getting a little esoteric with endings but come on! If you promise to tell me about a sugar bowl and then you just... don't tell me... that's annoying.
It doesn't help that my least favorite part of ASoUE was the whole VFD conspiracy, and that the last couple of books in the series are absolutely mired in VFD rigamarole... but that's a personal preference. All in all, it seems to me that if you're going to tell a story over the course of thirteen books, you should at least serve up a better ending than "This isn't the end, it's just a beginning". Do sequels if you want, but at least give the people who read across thirteen novels a degree of closure.
I will say this however- I've been listening to the last couple of Lemony Snicket books on CD and Tim Curry does a really great job on 'em. I usually prefer a non-celebrity reading my books-on-tape, but Curry manages to make me forget that he's Dr. Frank N. Futer and does a...more
