Book One of the Otherland series starts off quickly and doesn't let up, introducing the reader to a vision of our world in the next several decades. Internet access is as pervasive as TV or radio, and the average person interacts online through multiple sensory inputs, not just a keyboard. Things that aren't clear at the beginning often stay that way for a while: BE PATIENT. The main characters don't know what's really going on either, so take a deep breath (or better yet, an oxygen tank) and hold on.
I'm so glad you're reading this! I really enjoyed this series, but Eli got bogged down in the first book. Which I can't blame him for, it's easy to get bogged down; I had a hard time getting through the first "Dungeoons and Dragons" scene, which was waaaay too long. But other than that, I really can't find much fault with the books. I tend to like series on a epic scale, and he goes so far with it. Did I mention that I'm excited that you're reading these books? :-) Maybe I should re-read them along with you.
I actually read through the series while I was in Belize, but I am most definitely going to go through it again. I know there was stuff I missed all the way through. :-)
