recommended for: Very few, actually - it's the kind of information I want to keep to myself and wow people with.
Woohoo! History in a can. It's true that a book like this has been needed since the beginning of time, and now we have it in an exceptionally easy to read tome. The only problem is taking it all in. Clearly this is a book that needs re-reading every few years just to add to what you absorbed last time round.
If I'm honest I was a little cautious about picking it up - as the only other Bryson I'd tried reading (Notes from a Small Island) seemed a tad dull and unexciting to me (possibly because I live on said small island) and I only got about a third of the way through before blowing it off for something altogether more exciting - and if you want a history of nearly everything you want it from someone you can relate to. However, the writing is done with such an inherent love and enthusiasm for the finding out of the unknown that the journey is an absolute joy, and it's hard to imagine that anyone else could have made a better job of it.
