Only read the first 40 pages so far but already I don't like it. What is the value in reading about the hellish existence of children being raised by white trash? Still, it comes highly recommended so I'm going to continue and hope it is worth the time...

This is what I originally wrote, and unfortunately, I did not change my mind. The book was exceptionally well written but it's hard to see the value. Also, there were some glaring inconsistencies (Mom and Dad never had a telephone, they wind up homeless on the streets of New York City, then become squatters in an abandoned building and THEN they have a telephone??? Or did the author mean when she said she called them that she lifted one of her apartment windows and screamed down Park Avenue? Come on now.) I'm not saying the author embellished, or lied. I don't know if she embellished, or lied. I just know there were inconsistencies, and this was a DEPRESSING story.
