The cover catches you first, with its worn-looking pulp-fiction, mid-century comic-book style-like design; and as it advertises five of King’s shorter works – all of which have been translated onto the big screen to varying degrees of box office success (or not). One of my most favorite of all King short stories is reprinted here: “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” – which was also made into one of the finest King movie adaptations ever by Frank Darabont. I also found a new appreciation for “Children of the Corn” – which is far more eerie as a work of nail-biting prose than the series of B-movies that it spawned.

However, the other works included in this collection don’t hold up as well as others that could have been included. “The Mist”, for one, is one of my favorite all-time King novellas right up there alongside “Shawshank” – but isn’t included here. No surprise, King dedicated this new paperback collection to Darabont, who helmed both cinematic treatments.

For some suspenseful and unnerving reading, Stephen King Goes to the Movies is a treat; particularly with his commentaries before each of his five stories.
