Kate and Marylin used to be best friends, but they had a falling out last year in sixth grade and now they're each trying to figure out exactly who they are. Kate decides to learn how to play the guitar and she starts writing songs. Marylin is a cheerleader but starting to realize that maybe being popular isn't worth putting up with mean girls.

This is a quiet story about two girls figuring out their relationship, making new friends, and starting to discover themselves. It's solidly a "girl book" and really reminded me of some of Judy Blume's books that I loved as a kid. The writing and descriptions are wonderful and I loved the wide cast of characters. I haven't read the first book, but I think this one can stand alone. It made me want to go back and read the first book, which I think is a mark of a really good sequel!
