Very interesting book by a brain anatomist who herself suffered a severe brain hemorrhage at the age of 37. The stroke almost completely disabled her left brain (the area of the brain that flooded with blood, and which is responsible for language, math, spatial concepts, and the concept of time). The result was the temporary solo functioning of her right brain, which brought on a sense of deep peace and oneness with the universe (an easier state of mind to find oneself in when one can literally no longer discern the boundaries of one's body). This is fascinating evidence that the sense of the "oceanic" is innate in human beings, and merely suppressed by left=brain dominance. Taylor spent eight years regaining her ability to speak, read, write, detect spatial relations, and work with numbers, but says she has not lost the ability to tap into the "oneness" she discovered during and after her stroke.
