Heartbreaking story, although with a hopeful ending. It's written mainly in letters, with the occasional poem, and the writing itself is beautiful and fluid. I liked the characters a lot, and it was nice to finally read about foster care situations working well, but I rarely believed this was actually a 12 year old boy. I think it stood just fine without the first companion book, Locomotion, which I won't be tracking down because apparently, this is the much more hopeful of the two. Yikes.
