This was a well-done historical fiction. I was reminded of the Count of Monte Cristo, which is ironic, given that the French classic is named in this book.

I learned a lot of what I suppose to be fact about the penal colonies in Australia.

This doesn't rate 4 stars because I felt it dragged a bit at times. Sleighs ending was abrupt and felt a little like a give-up, or that the author just didn't know where else to go. Otherwise, a very interesting read of what has otherwise been a tough 'must-read' list.
