Kids love these from grade 3 and up, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. I see the appeal of the heavily illustrated handwritten looking style (thought I definitely would not call it a graphic novel-- no panels), but I didn't really like the book. Maybe Greg Heffley is meant to be every-kid, but he came off as selfish and mean far too often for me to root for him. For middle school kids who liked this, I might recommend Jon Sciezska's autobiography Knuckleheads. It makes comedy out of the mundane in a similar fashion.
