I came away from this one feeling like there should be more "there" there.

Alternate Seattle in the 1800s is pretty cool, but everyone's motivations were all over the shop. There's enough shiny steampunk activity going on that you don't necessarily notice the odd holes in characterization and story until you're getting to the tying-up-loose-ends stage, but now I've finished the book I'm stuck feeling like I have no clue why half of the people were doing what they were doing. At all.

Probably a good "intro to steampunk" book, ideal for teenagers, and it was nice to see a 35 year old woman at the center of the action. But overall, I wouldn't buy this book again.
