I must admit I didn't enjoy Villette as I enjoyed Jane Eyre. Partly, this was because Lucy Snowe's religious devotion and (for want of a better word) prudishness really irritated me. Though she, Like Jane Eyre, was an independent character, which I liked, Lucy Snowe's character was a little harder to like. The fact that the spaces between major events were filled by pages of Lucy's complaints about the immorality of Ginerva Fanshawe's flirtations.

I did like the romance between M. Paul and Lucy. It was interesting and I came to like the book more and more as I read. Charlotte Bronte was a good writer, and though I didn't enjoy this as I did Jane Eyre, it was still a good read.
