I didn't quite love this book. McCann is definitely a writer of great skill who pays careful attention to detail and is invested in the humanity of his characters. On the other hand, it feels like the literary equivalent of an "Oscar movie," where everything about it is calibrated to feel like an Important and Ambitious Literary Novel(TM). It's hard to bear the book any ill will, but I couldn't quite love it.
