It ended up being just "ok". Some sections about minor characters were long and boring and didn't move the story along. I flipped through some sections. Most of the characters turned out to be unsympathetic, although the ending for two of the characters (who aren't featured in most of the book) is a triumph.

Looking forward to the movie.

Ok read, but not the best.

***
I always hesitated to read this because I thought it would be a Danielle Steele-esque kind of read ... I stopped reading Danielle Steele before I turned 20.

Anyway, I remember my mother swooning over Richard Chamberlain in the mini-series made of the book and figured that was another reason not to like it (if Mom likes it, how can I?).

But, I'm a desperate reader these days and plucked this one off the shelf: it has great reviews, it's long, and I liked the first sentence. I'm a few chapters in and I'm already intrigued.

Will definitely watch the mini-series (thanks, Netflix) when I'm dong with the book.
