This is a fascinating take on Alice in Wonderland... or in this case Alyss Heart from Wonderland. In this story, your imagination really can create anything your heart desires... physically! The Queen of Hearts, used to be Alyss' mom, until her Aunt Redd murders her and steals the crown. Alyss tries to escape through the Pool of Tears, but in doing so, she ends up in Victorian London; alone, depressed and unable to use her imagination anymore.

While Alyss grows up in London, Wonderland becomes a horrible place, thanks to the evil mind of Redd Heart. The ordinary people of Wonderland are treated horribly and either killed or sent off to work camps. A small group of people band together and hope that someday Alyss will come back to save them.

Having read the original book, I thought that this was a delightfully imaginative take on the story. This update would appeal to girls and guys since there's a little bit of everything; violence and killing, love and romance, carnage and warfare, magic and fantasy.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book!
