When we're talking about a mind-blowing work of non-fiction, this immediately jumps to mind. Maybe you know the story already, but for my money this book alone explains how our government really works and also how we directly contributed to (hell, funded and helped arm as well) the terrorist activity we so fear today. I admit that after 9/11 I was one of those Americans (all of 18 years old at the time) wondering "Why do THEY hate us?". Well, this book explains who THEY are and you get the WHY for free. Essentially, not to spoil it but I can't spoil it because it really happened, we fought a secret war in Afghanistan by creating an army of "techno-warriors" on the Pakistan border developed to vanquish and bleed the Soviet Union. A congressman and a back-room CIA operative funded a war without Americans knowing about it.
