This is a facinating picture book that is based on the author's childhood, a boy who fled Poland during the Warsaw blitz with absolutely no possesions. The story centers around the day that his father returned from market with a large map but no bread. Though he was starving, the author forgave his father because the map allowed him to escape much like a book would have allowed. The author's note on the last page is facinating and gives an overview of his childhood and his start as an illustrator.
