Totally lost my patience with this book. I understand it's a kids book but the main character basically gambles her life away. Sure, she fights off the man and steals his survival suit and sets off on a journey BUT (1) in a doomsday survival situation why should she have to give up her home? (2) she's setting off basically unprotected with little to no chance she will find another place capable of sustaining life; (3) how many other deranged predatory men is she likely to run into if she does find another place capable of sustaining life? I really wanted her just to shoot the bastard and take her home and livelihood back. Life ain't a fairy tale.

I can see why it's a classic because of the characterization, descriptions, settings, etc. I think I was just not in the mood to read this book, not in the right frame of mind -- a more innocent frame of mind.
