I love love love this book! It often happens that when I read a children's book I can't help feeling that I would've liked it better or been more impressed had I read it as a child. That is not the case with A Little Princess. Sara Crewe is a wonderful, dignified character who is intelligent, kind, strong and wise beyond her years. She is a princess when she is rich and treated with reverence by all the people in her boarding school. She is still a princess, even after her father dies and loses all his fortune, leaving her penniless and with nowhere to go. She is always a princess, despite the fact that she has to go from being a show pupil to a lowly servant at the school. Nearly everyone treats her like trash, but she never becomes spiteful or stoops to the level of those who scorn her. A girl like Sara deserves nothing less than magic, such as that which helps her go through daily suffering and turns her luck around through a seemingly improbable coincidence. Because of those reasons above and so much more, this book deserves my five stars. Because being a princess "has nothing to do with what you look like, or what you have. It has only to do with what you think of, and what you do".

Rauf ya read pretty darn fast these days, D.

Meghan YAY! Now go read The Secret Garden. And then go find the movie versions. It's wunderbar!

message 6: by Paramita (new)

Paramita Wah never thought you would really like it :)

Dini Rauf: That's because this book is pretty darn short ;D

Meghan: I actually knew about The Secret Garden first. I read a comic version as a child, then read the original for a class in college. That's why I can't believe I've never come across A Little Princess before.

Paramita: I didn't expect to like it this much as well...

Rauf but you finished 4 books in 2 weeks, right? if I'm not mistaken...

message 11: by Dini (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dini Well, they were short. Two of them were children's books and one was a non-fiction that just basically requires skimming. I like short books, they make me feel a little better about myself ;D

The Shadow of the Wind is quite long so I might slow down a little right now though.

Roos Lagi-lagi mabok ma reviewnya Dini. Aku suka bagian ini nih: Because being a princess "has nothing to do with what you look like, or what you have. It has only to do with what you think of, and what you do"....huhuhu.

Dini Itu kutipan dari bukunya, Roos... si Sara ini meskipun ditindas dan dihina2 tapi dia selalu sopan dan ga pernah ngebales. Karena katanya "I'm a princess. A princess must be polite." Buseeeeet.

Kathryn I LOVED your review, Dini and I'm so happy that you LOVED the book! :-) It's been years since I read it, but I do remember really feeling a connection with Sara and the story.

message 21: by Dini (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dini Thanks, Kathryn :) Reading the story, I do get very emotionally attached to Sara.

message 22: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn I am not sure how accurate it is regarding the book (it saw them some time apart) but I absolutely love the film version with Liesel Matthews. I think it is gorgeously filmed and very magical.
