i am unsure about giving 2 or 3 stars to this book. there were times when i couldn't put it down, and times when i wished it was over already.

i kept waiting for the big secret to be revealed as to why Elphaba was wicked. it never came or i missed it entirely. i don't think she was wicked. she was just miserable and depressed for having crappy things happen to her in her crappy life. she was simple, intelligent, caring, driven, etc. which i don't find to be wicked qualities. with all the unfortunate circumstances of her life, you'd think she WOULD be wicked. i think Glinda was wicked and dishonest, as well as some other characters in the story. what about fiyero's and sarima's kids? they were little shits! there is a big disconnect with how i remember the witch from the movie (i know i should have probably read the original books), and how she is portrayed in this book. even when she encounters dorothy, she feels sorry for her. she just wants the shoes because they are hers, but mostly she is more afraid what the wizard might do if he gets a hold of them. she seems to be always thinking of the bigger picture and never of herself.

i think the author did a great job of transporting the reader into Oz with all the strange names and history/background, but many time he quickly sucked me back out with strange dialogue or descriptions which i found irritating.

i had no interest in reading about how Fiyero fondled her nips and had big boners for her. maybe that was to show the reader how she was capable of love, but then why call her wicked?

eh, maybe i give it 3 since it's making me think.
