The book Fire From the Rock is book about the Civil Rights movement. Sylvia Patterson is a girl who lives in Arkansas. She has a older brother, and a younger sister. Sylvia has to deal with many things school, family, friends, and of course boys. There is one abnormal thing that Sylvia has to deal with that no young girl should have to deal with, it is segregation. She has to put up with people picking on her her family, and the people like her. Sylvia is a very smart girl, and she has been chosen to go to Central High School next year. She has to decide wether she wants to stay with her friends and go to the "colored" school or go to the "white" school. Which will she Choose?

This book is very moving. It shows you what many of the african americans went through. It showed all the hatred towards them. I think that no one should be treated like that. Some of the events that took place like in the beginning of the book where it tells about Sylvia's little sister getting attacked by the neighbor's dog, because the neighbor trained the dog to attack them. Another example of the hatred is when Sylvia and her little sister went to the library and were waiting for the bus when some white boys attacked them. Not all the people treated them that way though, because in the library situation, after they got attacked, a white boy helped them.
