really liked it
bookshelves: adventure, fantasy, j, not-graphic, guys-read

A rousing fantasy adventure full of mysterious magics, deadly danger, and unknown worlds, all grounded in excellent characters (and western Kansas). Wilson took the promise of more to come at the end of 100 Cupboards and expanded it far beyond my imaginings and expectations. If I have one gripe it's that it fell right into many of the usual fantasy tropes (existence-threatening absolute evil, orphan unknowingly destined for greatness by birth, etc.) when I think it had the potential to be something more unique. But I think upper elementary readers will love it. 4.5 stars.

“Self-loathing and self-worship can easily be the same thing. You hate the small sack of fluids and resentments that you are, and you would go to any length, and betray anything and anyone, to preserve it.”

“What I say is, don't go playing unless you can win. Only sit down to chess with idiots, only kick a dog what's dead already, and don't love a lady unless she loves you first.”
