This book did not know what it wanted to be. It was BDSM, then it was menage; it was a romance, then a friend story; it was about overcoming a dysfunctional childhood - no, it was about sacrificial love; it was sweet one minute and ridiculous the next ("Milord"? Really?)
I think it just tried too hard. I would like to be able to give 2 and 1/2 stars, but I bumped it up to 3 because there was good writing to be found (and also because you can't give half stars!).
