Karen Hesse won a Newbery Medal for this beautifully written story of a young girl in the 1930's, who not only must find a way to survive the terrible dust bowl in Oklahoma, but also the personal tragedy of her mother's death and her own part in it. Billie-Jo's hands are burned and painful, taking away her joy in playing the piano. All she wants is to get away from the unrelenting dust that covers everything, choking the life from the land, and her father's terrible silence. How will she find her own way out of the dust? This is a story of loss and despair, and of hope and healing, that fills the heart.
